I've finally arrived in the US and had the chance to try the Himalayan mad honey samples that recently arrived. Read more here.
After tasting the honey, I experienced a mild headache, likely due to a sugar high as the honey was incredibly sweet and quite different from regular honey. I believe mixing this honey into mead or adding it during the sweetening phase could retain its unique properties. it wasn't so much a psychedelic kind of experience that is portrayed online and more like a sugar high due to the insane sweetness of the honey. but to be fair, we also did drink some Mead right before so we were also potentially a little drunk, but still if I was going to reach some sort of a mental effect, I probably would have had to eat a lot more of the honey to the point where it bleeds between a sugar high anyways, and who knows. there's also a chance that in a large collection of Honey there might be some natural fermentation anyways, so maybe the mad honey is a combination of hyper sweeteness paired with fermented honey and it makes a natural me using natural yeast, but there was definitely not any crazy effects that I could feel with these batches. Maybe with certain batches of more rhodendron focused honey, would there be those effects? and so I think and this is typically the case for most thing, a concentrated, controlled flower feed zone for the bees, or even synthetic version of the honey would be what causes it to have that strong reaction.
Mead Reviews
2022 Super-Sweet
Very sweet. The yeast died before it could consume all of the sugars and too much honey was put into the vat, so it turned out super sweet. The depth of flavor wasn't developed as it was basically alcoholic sugar water. The mead was very cloudy, so it didn't have the 'fanciness' that it could have with mead. 3/10 but still enjoyable to drink. I've had MUCH worse meads, but since this one was one of the first batches of mead, it holds a special spot in my heart ;)
2023 Sweet
Wow, this one was great! It was both clear and developed. The fermentation process was done with a much more refined process with cleaned tools and also set up in a very good environment. The flavor was both strong but crisp and still sweet but also very smooth and not too sugary. There was a slight disharmony between the strength and sweetness, so maybe it was slightly too sweet, but it's definitely a 9/10.
