Medova - Ukrainian Mead: Slavic Strong
Every now and then, you come across a drink that just doesn't hit the mark. Unfortunately, Medova "Buckwheat" Vodka, a Ukrainian mead, falls into this category for me. With a staggering 40% ABV, this drink is far too strong to be enjoyed on its own, resembling whiskey more than a traditional mead. The buckwheat source may cause extra bitterness which isn't what I am a fan of.
A Harsh Reality
ABV: 40%
Manufacturer: Medova
Medova, with its natural buckwheat honey and herbal tinctures of marjoram, thyme, cinnamon, and peppermint, promises a rich and balanced taste. However, in reality, the high alcohol content overwhelms these flavors, making it difficult to enjoy without mixing.
The Struggles with Medova
Flavor Profile
While Medova does have a hint of honey sweetness, it’s largely overshadowed by its strong alcoholic punch. The blend of herbs is interesting in theory, but the execution leaves much to be desired as the alcohol dominates the palate.
Versatility
Given its strength, Medova is not a drink you can enjoy straight. It requires mixing to make it palatable, otherwise, you risk an unpleasant experience and possibly a headache. This need for dilution or mixers takes away from the convenience and enjoyment of sipping mead.
Strength
At 40% ABV, Medova is essentially a whiskey with a faint hint of honey. This high alcohol content makes it challenging to appreciate the subtle flavors of the buckwheat honey and herbs. For those expecting a smooth mead experience, Medova is a letdown.
Overall Impression
Medova "Buckwheat" Vodka scores a disappointing 2/10 for me. Its high alcohol content, combined with a lack of balance in flavors, makes it more of a whiskey than a mead. While it has potential with its interesting blend of ingredients, the overwhelming alcohol presence ruins the experience.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for a smooth and enjoyable mead, Medova might not be the right choice. Its high ABV and overpowering alcohol flavor make it more suitable for those who enjoy strong spirits. If you do decide to try it, be sure to mix it well to avoid an unpleasant drinking experience.
